Surprise!

I love surprises. And got big one today. Tyttö has been a bit mysterious lately and today she...just had to reveal it! She has been writing this blog a while about our weekends and trips.

Dont know was the reason her impatience ;) or because I was tired and grumpy after long work day and she wanted to cheer me up after dinner. Actually, I don't care. I love surprises. She made my day. Again.

So we have new contributor. Henceforth there might be a bit more masculine angle in posts as well. And he loves surprises.

Mustafa, oh, Mustafa...

We thought we'd take it a little easy this weekend, coz we are kinda broke. Started with a simple plan... We'll have lunch at Little India, take a little walk around and check out Mustafa (the ridiculously packed 24hour store that sells everything from gold to toilet brush).

We then took our earnest window shopping goal to Arab Street, but failed with a big fat F! It was the ultimate nightmare for window shoppers. We whipped out our wallets very soon after we stepped into a local shop called BlackMarket (19 Jalan Pisang). Poika came out with a cool Nixon watch, two t-shirts (for me) and a rubber diamond necklace (for me too). And I somehow caught his spending bug and bought myself 3 pairs of shoes, 2 tops and a some other random stuff at Orchard after. Somehow this take-it-easy Saturday, made us quite a lot poorer.

My oh-so-lovely 2000-carat rubber diamond necklace

Today, we are really gonna take it easy. Movie and sports, nothing more. For real :)

Oh and I gotta talk or rather 'whine' about our run. Running with this guy is quite a nightmare. He really does not give up! And he does not allow me to give up either. It was extremely torturous for me as I do have a natural tendency to surrender. So I guess at the end of my whining, it is awesome that he is constantly pushing me, coz i so need that. Now I am proud of myself for having completed close to an hour's run. Proof below. And you can see my great dip.

A tap-tap around

sSinaMy dear Poika haven't had a chance to explore the suburbs since he arrived here. So, with our camera and ezlink card in tow, we took a long train ride to explore the suburbs.

The ride started at Eunos and our first stop was at Toa Payoh, one of Singapore's oldest HDB estate. It was also where I grew up. There are now malls and new developments amongst the old HDBs, completely different from the '80s when the main entertainment center was a cinema.

We also stopped at a few other HDB suburb stations like Khatib and Yishun. The suburbs all mainly look about the same, most have a mall and surrounded by lots of HDB flats. It was possibly rather interesting for Poika, but somewhat boring for me. He was expecting drunk and homeless people on the streets, but of course was greatly disappointed. The people are not very different from the ones you see in the city as 80% of Singaporeans live in the Suburbs in HDBs. The only difference is people are a lot more dress down when they are near home.

The interesting stop for me, was at Kranji. The station for the Singapore Turf Club. I've always wanted to visit, but never seem to get round to doing it. We paid a small entrance fee and saw a side of Singapore that was not very common. It was crowded with old sketchy men (as expected). The ground was littered with crushed newspapers and betting tickets. There were more sights of disappointments than exhilarating wins.

We then moved on to our next stop at Bukit Gombak. At the west of Singapore, is home to a little surprise of nature. There is a granite rock sitting within a lake and we call this place the Xiao (small) Guilin because it has scenery that looks like Guilin in China. But of course, Singapore's version of Guilin has apartment blocks in the background!

Camp Pong at Scape

We (or rather I) played crappy ping pong with a beer in hand at a pop-up ping pong bar at Scape. Lots of hot chicks and fancy dress boys to check out while taking a break.
Oh and of course Sami and I won in our Beer Pong match against Antti and Heidi. They were terrible at it! Muahahaha...

Our attempt to be sporty turned out to be a lot of fun. We'd love to this again before it closes for good. Hopefully someone will open a longer term ping pong bar?

Weekend on the BlackManta

We just got back from a short weekend dive trip on board the Black Manta. Our first time on a live aboard. And my first time diving with Sami and Aleksi. It was a pretty good trip overall. The cabin was clean and spacious and the food was good.

We arrived at Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal at 6:30pm and sailed overnight to our morning dive site at the Anambas Islands on Indonesian waters. We had a total of six dives. Four on Day 1, and two on Day 2. The night dive at Pulau Aur was the best in the whole trip, followed by the last dive at Pinnacles 2.

We also dove the 7 Skies Wreck on the first day, that was rather disappointing. It was deep (we went down to about 38m) and there was not very much to see. It was pretty like most wrecks, but we spent most of our time hanging on to the rope because of the current during decent and ascent.

Diving, eating, sleeping and reading was all we did the whole weekend. Oh it's really nice to lie on the deck watching the beautiful sunset and starry sky. Simply awesome.

We'd love to do this again. Maybe with a bigger group, so there is no need to make small talk with strangers (I was feeling rather anti-social), and no one was particularly 'entertaining' on board.

CookOut No.2: The Pizza Party

When: 5 June 2010, Saturday
Where: Winstedt Road
Menu: Salad, Pizzas (Tuna, Grilled Vegetables, Prosciutto and one that's all mixed up)
Guests: Sancia, Marina, Felicia, Jimmy and Aleksi
Alcohol: Beer (26 cans), white wine (2), red wine (2), vodka shot (1)

Our two helpers, Mina and Sancia were waiting for us when we got back from shopping. We started chopping, grilling the vegetables, and making the sauce at around 4pm. Because there were so many of us, Poika was complaining that he had nothing to do. So he just hung around and 'bossed' the girls around.

The boring bit of the prep was not very appealing to us, we were impatiently anticipating the highlight of the day. Making the dough! All the kneading and rolling just seems so much like playdoh, we can't wait to get our hands all sticky.

So here are the girls taking turns at play-dough.

After all that exercise, our tummies get rewarded with four delicious handmade pizzas. By the end of it, we were too stuffed to move. So we just sat around, had more beer and get fat!

And Aleksi was the last man standing, together with Sancia and I at 4am.

Hit by the wanderlust: Trip No.1 Penang

When: 28 May to 30 May 2010
Where: Penang, Malaysia
Hotel: Eastern and Oriental Hotel, Georgetown

It's the Vesak Day long weekend, and Poika insisted that we have to go somewhere. (He seems to have some sort of a strange disease that forbids him to stay in the country whenever there's a long weekend. I think it's called the Wanderlustitis.) We originally wanted to go to Hong Kong, but the when we added all the possible expenses, the trip turned out to be quite costly. Malacca was second choice but it didn't happen as the nice hotels were fully booked. So we ended up in Penang. We booked a terribly expensive flight on Jetstar (cost us SGD $500 each!), and a really nice suite at the Eastern and Oriental Hotel

Day 01 (Friday)
Arrived early in the morning, had breakfast in the hotel.
Went to Fort Cornwall, there wasn't much to see, except a few old canons and a really short fort.

We then chanced upon an interesting place called the Pinang Peranakan Mansion. Pretty interesting tour.

Our guide, who claimed to be best in the house.
Having had enough of sweat pouring out from us, we had a dip in our nice little pool back in the hotel. Then dinner, and drinks at the street right across from us. And in our drunken state, paid 25ringgit each to get to a club to watch a hair cutting competition that's happening past midnight. How strange are these people?!

Day 02 (Saturday)

We decided to take in the Vesak Day festivities and took a trip to Kek Lok Si Temple. It's a huge temple that sits on a hill, about half hour drive from GeorgeTown. We could see the tall pagoda and a very big statue of the Goddess of Mercy quite far away in the cab. We spent a couple of hours in the temple, snapping away, got too tired too hot, hopped in a cab back to town to get a massage, feed our hungry tummy and dip in the pool.

For dinner, Poika found a Peranakan restaurant in a street called Jalan Nagore. We were pleasantly surprised when we got there. It was a quiet street of Peranakan shophouses, with pretty fairy lights. We walked around for a bit, but there really wasn't anything much. Other than a pretty cool bike cafe. After our very short exploration, we went for Peranakan food at a place called Nonya and Baba. Yummy!

And of course, we ended the night with drinks at the bar.

Day 03 (Sunday)

We have a couple of hours to spare before our flight in the morning. After our big fat breakfast, we went to the famous Blue Mansion just across our hotel. It's a quaint old mansion with quite a bit of history. It won a UNESCO Most Excellent Heritage Conservation Award in 2000. Was worth visiting and we had an extremely chatty guide to keep us entertained for over an hour. No photo taking allowed, but naughty me just had to do it.

It was overall a short and sweet holiday. We'd be really bored if we had spent any more time than we had there. Now, time to get excited about our next trip. We are going diving! Yay!

Some extras...
• Another nice place to stay.
• And check out some of their recommendations here.

Happy Birthday Tyttö

When: 11 May 2010, Tuesday
Where: Indochine Clarke Quay

I turn 31 this year and I am not a big fan of fancy birthday celebrations. I like mine small, cozy and simple. Because we had crazy cookout the weekend before my birthday, I just want a simple dinner and a couple of drinks, afterall, it's a school day.

Poika got me a really sweet gift. A book on Finnish Summer Houses. We talked about it on one of our nights out and I told him about how I'd like to build a house of my own as a retirement project (I have no idea how I'm gonna do it, nor do I have any skills required. So for now, it's still a dream.) Umm...If I'm not wrong, that might be the inspiration for the gift. Yes?

CookOut No.1: The Chef's test

When: 8 May 2010
Where: Winstedt Road
Menu: Antipasto; Mushroom Risotto with salmon
Guests: Sancia, Marina and Shah
Alcohol: Prosecco (2), white wine (2), red wine (2), beer (5 cans)

Qualities of my dream man:
Can cook, play the drums and drive a stick.

Poika can cook (used to be a chef in the hottest Italian restaurant in Helsinki), play the drums in RockBand (good enough for me) and of course drive a stick!

So yes, I have met my MrDreamMan. Surely I have to make sure there's no bullshit here and put him to the test. That's why the cookout. So the first test was kept small, housemates only, just in case he's a complete flop and that will be a huge disappointment to my many critical and greedy friends.

Poika pretty much did everything. I was kind of pretending to work the whole time he was slaving away. After 2 hours of labouring in the extremely hot kitchen, we had the entire table filled with brilliant antipasto. I was gleaming cheek to cheek with extreme pride. "I think he's for real" I thought to myself.

The spread was pure orgasmic. Happy greedy friends (check), Happy Poika (check), Happy Tytto (check). It was overall a beautiful evening with awesome food, loads of booze, and loud happy drunk people.

Hello :)

This blog is meant as a little surprise for Poika. Hopefully after its reveal, it will be our little project.

We have done quite a lot of things together because this guy will not stay still. I thought it will be nice if we blog about it, so our friends (especially his friends back home) can follow our action-packed life and also get some ideas on fun things to do.

So far, the highlights of our weekends are...
Poika's mail-order bride – Charlotte (his fixie bike), our first cook-out at home and a short weekend get-away.

Poika's new wife, Charlotte. I have to say the both of them look real cute together.
